Los productos de higiene dental Colgate nacieron en 1806 en Nueva York de la mano de William Colgate. En un principio éste abrió una fábrica de jabones, almidón y velas bajo el nombre comercial “William Colgate Company”. Al morir, su hijo Samuel cambia el nombre a Colgate & Colgate. En 1873 aparece la crema dental meramente cosmética en pequeñas jarras que poco tiempo después pasaron a formato tubo. En 1908 salió a bolsa y dejó de ser una empresa familiar.
